Quilombo Rhythm: How Africa Civilized Brazil Through Music

This video talks about some of the most important cultural manifestations of Brazil, and their deep roots in Africa, primarily through music. Some of the biggest parties, the most famous Brazilian rhythms, and the main features of what can be considered the Brazilian identity, were shaped by the music that came from many different places in Africa, through the slavery process. With the mixing of different cultures, and the resistance against the slavery, we began to have what we can considered today as a essencial part of Brazilian culture, once was forbidden, persecuted, and stigmatized (as it still is). This video contains excerpts from the ASM lectures "Semente, Cabasa, Baobá, Sankofa: Exploring the African Roots and Cultural Significance of music in Brazil", with three guest speakers from Brazil: Bruna Silva, Rogério Siqueira, and Floresta Lamp. Also it has parts from the article written by professor Bruna, that was posted full in our website. The link is bellow: Bruna's article: https://asmblog.wixsite.com/asmblog/post/exu-ax%C3%A9-ginga-and-quilombo-the-soundscapes-of-brazilian-outdoors Aesthetically Speaking Music (ASM) is a series of sessions about African diasporic music and culture. It is presented online, with educators from across the USA and Brazil. ASM explores the philosophies and challenges of Great Thinkers in this musical traditions. We examine the psycho-social, political and economic aesthetics of creative endeavors. Innovators, acknowledged and under acknowledged, have had a lasting effect on the world’s listeners and lovers of African diasporic music. Through deep listening and research, we observe the evolution and contributions of community scholars, vocalists, instrumentalists, recording labels, composers, arrangers, and the venues that served as forums for creative expressions.
